FEATURE SECTION
THE FOUR MAJOR SCHOOLS OF TIBETAN BUDDHISM The Gelug Lineage: The Tradition of the Great Tsongkhapa
Rigorous study and debate, the foundation of Gelug monastic education, have given rise to many a gifted debater, scholar, and leader. Founded by the great master Tsongkhapa, the Gelug tradition is now well known for such beloved and influential figures as His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, as well as many well-respected Western scholar-practitioners. Taking the Stages of the Path (Lam Rim - based on the teachings of Atisha) and six seminal works of Tsongkhapa to be their core teachings, study of these texts are combined with deity yoga practices, especially Guhyasamaja, to bring about the union of view and meditation. In the last issue of the Four Major Schools of Tibetan Buddhism series, we present the history, view, and meditation of the “Yellow Hat Sect,” and discuss some of the features that differentiate the Gelug lineage from the other three major schools.
